In a landmark moment for Telugu cinema, the peppy dance number Naatu Naatu from high-octane action film RRR claimed victory at the 95th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars. This marks the first time an Indian feature film has secured an Oscar, etching a significant milestone in Telugu storytelling.
Composed by M.M. Keeravaani and penned by lyricist Chandrabose, Naatu Naatu means ‘Dance Dance’ in Telugu. The song, featuring the film’s protagonists Komaram Bheem (Jr NTR) and Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan), is a visual spectacle of synchronized steps, intricate formations, and infectious energy.
Directed by SS Rajamouli, RRR is a fictional exploration of two real-life Indian revolutionaries who join forces to fight against British colonial rule. The film, released in March 2022, garnered immense popularity domestically and internationally, breaking box office records and gaining critical acclaim for its action sequences, emotional depth, and vibrant visuals.
Apart from capturing the hearts of viewers, Naatu Naatu garnered rave reviews for its choreography by Prem Rakshit. The award was introduced by Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone at the event, sung by Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, and danced live to by Billy Mustapha and Jason Glover.
